EMI has announced the move to sell music tracks (mp3) without any DRM (Digital Rights Management.). This sounds like a double-edged knife. On one hand, it allows the consumer to play the songs without any restrictions, he/she can transfer and play it in any player, anywhere. On the other hand, he/she can share the files more freely, and that's where the dilemma for piracy comes in ...
In my opinion, I really support this revolutionary move. Mp3s has all along been freely distributed, all you need is just a person who buys the CD, rips out the tracks into mp3s and share them freely - such as using rapidshare, bandango. I'm guessing consumers will support this move - imagine now you can buy songs easily without any restrictions, play it on any mp3 player and PC, and the mp3 is originally created by the record company which means you are getting quality songs - moreover, these 'premium' tracks will be of higher quality than those with DRM ones. I believe everyone has got the experience that after downloading an album that is 'freely distributed', you were very disappointed with the sound quality. This may be due to the ripper not using the corrrect encoder or he upstepped the playback quality from a 64kbps wma to 128kbps mp3 - this really makes the songs sound hollow and it is definitely giving unjustice to the artistes and the efforts done by any music creators. So I think this revolutionary step by the EMI who recognises that what consumers want is convenience and quality as opposed to restricting them is correct. Personally, if given a channel, where I can download songs at a very high bandwidth / speed and where I can find the songs / albums I want easily (I know where to get it on its very first day of release) and where the price is reasonable and payment is easy, I would definitely choose the buy songs then rather trying to search the internet (waste of time) and downloading songs that do not promise quality!
